COUNTRY LIVING

Designed for a professional couple with arural lifestyle, this was a substantial addition to an early 20th century, foursquare farmhouse in Bennington, NE.  The addition nearly doubled the size of the original house, but did not dilute its original character.  A 2-1/2 story window tower mimics a farm silo and becomes a transitional focal point as the plan changes axis and spreads across the back of the original house.  The new addition includes a master bedroom suite with walk-in closets and master bath, a formal dining room, an open country kitchen, a large pantry/utility/mud room with space for canning, an entry foyer, and an informal T.V. area.  Construction consists of standard residential wood frame construction with 4” wood lapped siding to match materials on the existing farmhouse.  The main fireplace stack and house foundation are constructed with natural limestone.  Custom designed windows occur throughout adding additional detail and plentiful natural light.  This project received a Children’s Choice Award from the Nebraska State AIA and was designed while working for Ken Hahn & Associates.
